Example 1

In mid 2003 Viridor staff noted that forward contract prices for electricity were extremely low. We contacted a large user of electricity (a coal mine in Hunter Valley) whose current contract had over 12 months to run and suggested they go to the market early to lock in favorable prices.

Customer took advice and when rates contracted were compared to rates available in 2004 (when they would normally have gone to market) they saved $400,000 over the term of the 3 year contract they signed.

Example 2

In 2006 Viridor staff believed there was a risk of prices escalating significantly in 2007 due to looming drought (significant amounts of water are required for electricity generation). We suggested to a large health club operator that it may be a good idea to lock in rates in 2006 rather than waiting until mid 2007 (when their existing contact expired). Advice was taken and resulted in savings in excess of $1,000,000 over the term of the contract signed (3 years).

Increases in activity at one of sites reviewed, the network tariff currently in force was no longer the most cost effective. Viridor arranged for the network tariff to be changed and network costs dropped by (27%).

After reviewing invoices for a large hotel on Central Coast we noticed that the loss factors being charged were incorrect, after following this up with the electricity retailer, we managed to secure a refund of over $20,000.

Viridor carried out a detailed study on electricity consumption for a company that operates almost 100 health clubs across Australia. Based on the findings, internal benchmarks were developed, and poorly performing sites identified. These sites are now being closely studied to evaluate ways in which electricity efficiency can be improved and greenhouse gas emissions reduced

After reviewing consumption data for a company who had a large number of small sites, we noticed that most of their consumption occurred in off peak times (as opposed to peak times). We requested that those sites on a general supply tariff (a tariff that does not take into account when electricity is used) be shifted to a tariff that does take into account when electricity is used) This resulted in costs dropping by 25% at these sites.

Viridor recommended that a number of locations operated by a national retail chain take electricity supply via an energy and network type arrangement, rather than in bundled format (despite using less than 160mWh/pa). This resulted in cost reductions of around 25%.
